Functional Groups Dominate Aboveground Net Primary Production under Long-Term Nutrient Additions in a Tibetan Alpine Meadow

Anthropogenic nutrient additions are influencing the structure and function of alpine grassland ecosystems. However, the underlying mechanisms of the direct and indirect effects of nutrient additions on aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) are not well understood. In this study, we conducted an eight-year field experiment to explore the ecological consequences of nitrogen (N) and/or phosphorous (P) additions on the northern Tibetan Plateau. ANPP, species diversity, functional diversity, and functional groups were used to assess species’ responses to increasing nutrients. Our results showed that nutrient additions significantly increased ANPP due to the release in nutrient limitations. Although N addition had a significant effect on species richness and functional richness, and P and N + P additions altered functional diversity, it was functional groups rather than biodiversity that drove changes in ANPP in the indirect pathways. We identified the important roles of N and P additions in begetting the dominance of grasses and forbs, respectively. The study highlights that the shift of functional groups should be taken into consideration to better predict the structure, function, and biodiversity–ANPP relationship in grasslands, particularly under future multifaceted global change.

Plant traits modulate grassland stability during drought and post‐drought periods

Abstract Grasslands are subject to climate change, such as severe drought, and an important aspect of their functioning is temporal stability in response to extreme climate events. Previous research has explored the impacts of extreme drought and post‐drought periods on grassland stability, yet the mechanistic pathways behind these changes have rarely been studied. Here, we implemented an experiment with 4 years of drought and 3 years of recovery to assess the effects of drought and post‐drought on the temporal stability of above‐ground net primary productivity (ANPP) and its underlying mechanisms. To do so, we measured community‐weighted mean (CWM) of six plant growth and nine seed traits, functional diversity, population stability and species asynchrony across two cold, semiarid grasslands in northern China. We also performed piecewise structural equation models (SEMs) to assess the relationships between ANPP stability and its underlying mechanisms and how drought and post‐drought periods alter the relative contribution of these mechanisms to ANPP stability. We found that temporal stability of ANPP was not reduced during drought due to grasses maintaining productivity, which compensated for increased variation of forb productivity. Moreover, ANPP recovered rapidly after drought, and both grasses and forbs contributed to community stability during the post‐drought period. Overall, ANPP stability decreased during the combined drought and post‐drought periods because of rapid changes in ANPP from drought to post‐drought. SEMs revealed that the temporal stability of ANPP during drought and post‐drought periods was modulated by functional diversity and community‐weighted mean traits directly and indirectly by altering species asynchrony and population stability. Specifically, the temporal stability of ANPP was positively correlated with functional divergence of plant communities. CWMs of seed traits (e.g. seed width and thickness), rather than plant growth traits (e.g. specific leaf area and leaf nutrient content), stabilized grassland ANPP. Productivity of plant communities with large and thick seeds was less sensitive to precipitation changes over time. These results emphasize the importance of considering both the functional trait distribution among species and seed traits of dominant species since their combined effects can stabilize ecosystem functions under global climate change scenarios. Different nitrogen saturation thresholds for above-, below-, and total net primary productivity in a temperate steppe.

Identifying the thresholds for the positive responses of total net primary productivity (NPP) to nitrogen (N) enrichment is an essential prerequisite for predicting the benefits of N deposition on ecosystem carbon sequestration. However, the responses of below-ground NPP (BNPP) to N enrichment are unknown in many ecosystems, which limits our ability to understand the carbon cycling under the scenario of increasing N availability. We examined the changes in above-ground NPP (ANPP), BNPP, and NPP of a temperate meadow steppe across a wide-ranging N addition gradient (0, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 g N m-2  year-1 ) during 5 years. Both ANPP and NPP increased nonlinearly with N addition rates. The N saturation threshold for ANPP (TA ) and NPP (TN ) was at the rate of 13.11 and 6.70 g N m-2  year-1 , respectively. BNPP decreased with increasing N addition when N addition rates ˃5 g N m-2  year-1 , resulting in much lower TN than TA . Soil N enrichment played a key role in driving the negative impacts of high N addition rates on BNPP, and consequently on the earlier occurrence of N saturation threshold for NPP. Our results highlight the negative effects of soil N enrichment on NPP in natural grasslands super-saturated with N. Furthermore, by considering ANPP and BNPP simultaneously, our results indicate that previous findings from above-ground might have over-estimated the positive effects of N deposition on primary productivity.

Grassland productivity and diversity changes in responses to N and P addition depend primarily on tall clonal and annual species in semiarid Loess Plateau

Ecological benefits and production of grassland on the Loess Plateau are limited by low soil N and P availability. Extraneous N and P fertilization is an efficient management measure to enhance grassland productivity and accelerate grassland restoration. However, biodiversity decline and species loss induced by N and P addition must be noticed. Two grassland communities dominated by tall clonal grass (TCG) and tall clonal forb (TCF) on Loess Plateau were selected. A two-year split-plot experiment (main-plot: 0, 25, 50, and 100 kgN ha−1 yr−1; subplot: 0, 20, 40 and 80 kg P2O5 ha−1 yr−1) was conducted to evaluate the effect of N and P addition on aboveground net primary production (ANPP), light availability, diversity and functional group composition. N and P addition slightly increased ANPP mainly benefiting from clonal species and had few effects on species composition and diversity due to the deficient precipitation during growing season in 2017. However, N or P addition alone resulted in significant ANPP increase, and adding N and P together had larger effects in 2018. The changes in ANPP and diversity after P alone addition were driven by legumes. The ANPP responses to 50 and 100 kg N ha−1 yr−1 combined with P addition in 2018 were mainly driven by pronounced increases in tall clonal or annual species. This large shift of species composition caused diversity decline only in TCF community. The extent of diversity decline was significantly correlated with the degree of light availability reduction. Diversity decline in TCF was a result of strong and uniform light availability reduction induced by increased tall annual forb. Tall clonal and annual species are the key functional groups that drive changes in productivity and diversity in the two communities. The optimum N and P amount to tradeoff productivity improvement and diversity decline were 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1 and 20 kg P2O5 ha−1 yr−1 combination for TCG and 25 kg N ha−1 yr−1 and 20 kg P2O5 ha−1 yr−1 combination for TCF.

Assessing precipitation, evapotranspiration, and NDVI as controls of U.S. Great Plains plant production

AbstractProductivity throughout the North American Great Plains grasslands is generally considered to be water limited, with the strength of this limitation increasing as precipitation decreases. We hypothesize that cumulative actual evapotranspiration water loss (AET) from April to July is the precipitation‐related variable most correlated to aboveground net primary production (ANPP) in the U.S. Great Plains (GP). We tested this by evaluating the relationship of ANPP to AET, precipitation, and plant transpiration (Tr). We used multi‐year ANPP data from five sites ranging from semiarid grasslands in Colorado and Wyoming to mesic grasslands in Nebraska and Kansas, mean annual NRCS ANPP, and satellite‐derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data. Results from the five sites showed that cumulative April‐to‐July AET, precipitation, and Tr were well correlated (R2: 0.54–0.70) to annual changes in ANPP for all but the wettest site. AET and Tr were better correlated to annual changes in ANPP compared to precipitation for the drier sites, and precipitation in August and September had little impact on productivity in drier sites. April‐to‐July cumulative precipitation was best correlated (R2 = 0.63) with interannual variability in ANPP in the most mesic site, while AET and Tr were poorly correlated with ANPP at this site. Cumulative growing season (May‐to‐September) NDVI (iNDVI) was strongly correlated with annual ANPP at the five sites (R2 = 0.90). Using iNDVI as a surrogate for ANPP, we found that county‐level cumulative April–July AET was more strongly correlated to ANPP than precipitation for more than 80% of the GP counties, with precipitation tending to perform better in the eastern more mesic portion of the GP. Including the ratio of AET to potential evapotranspiration (PET) improved the correlation of AET to both iNDVI and mean county‐level NRCS ANPP. Accounting for how different precipitation‐related variables control ANPP (AET in drier portion, precipitation in wetter portion) provides opportunity to develop spatially explicit forecasting of ANPP across the GP for enhancing decision‐making by land managers and use of grassland ANPP for biofuels.

Hydrologic thresholds and changes in ANPP of artificial sand-fixing vegetation in a desert-oasis ecotone in Northwest China

The interactive relationships between ecological and hydrological processes drive plant performance, community structure, and community succession in arid areas. Yet the nature of potential hydrologic thresholds for responses of vegetation remains poorly understood. In this paper, we report on hydrologic thresholds associated with aboveground net primary production (ANPP) of Haloxylon ammodendron (HA) and sand-fixation region (SFR) between 1987 and 2012 in the ecotone of desert and oasis in the northwest China. In particular, we focused on precipitation and soil moisture dynamics. Our results showed that 1) ANPP and soil moisture of both HA and SFR decreased from 1987 to 2005, and then reached a stable state; 2) nonlinear models provided a much better fit to the data than linear models, highlighting the presence of a discontinuity in vegetation ANPP changes along precipitation and soil moisture gradients; 3) precipitation, accumulated between preceding-year June to current-year August, of <160 mm, or soil moisture at < 1.4–1.5% may decrease ANPP. Our results provide insights into the thresholds of precipitation and soil moisture in a long-term sand-fixing ecosystem, and highlight the importance of legacy precipitation for the recovery of the sand-fixing ecosystem. Consequently, the findings provide useful references for further understanding of the mechanisms of ANPP changes in a sand-fixing ecosystem with changes in precipitation and soil moisture.

Linkages of plant stoichiometry to ecosystem production and carbon fluxes with increasing nitrogen inputs in an alpine steppe.

Unprecedented levels of nitrogen (N) have entered terrestrial ecosystems over the past century, which substantially influences the carbon (C) exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere. Temperature and moisture are generally regarded as themajor controllers over the N effects on ecosystem C uptake and release. N-phosphorous (P) stoichiometry regulates the growth and metabolisms of plants and soil organisms, thereby affecting many ecosystem C processes. However, it remains unclear how the N-induced shift in the plant N:P ratio affects ecosystem production and C fluxes and its relative importance. We conducted a field manipulative experiment with eight N addition levels in a Tibetan alpine steppe and assessed the influences of N on aboveground net primary production (ANPP), gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE); we used linear mixed-effects models to further determine the relative contributions of various factors to the N-induced changes in these parameters. Our results showed that the ANPP, GEP, ER, and NEE all exhibited nonlinear responses to increasing N additions. Further analysis demonstrated that the plant N:P ratio played a dominate role in shaping these C exchange processes. There was a positive relationship between the N-induced changes in ANPP (ΔANPP) and the plant N:P ratio (ΔN:P), whereas the ΔGEP, ΔER, and ΔNEE exhibited quadratic correlations with the ΔN:P. In contrast, soil temperature and moisture were only secondary predictors for the changes in ecosystem production and C fluxes along the N addition gradient. These findings highlight the importance of plant N:P ratio in regulating ecosystem C exchange, which is crucial for improving our understanding of C cycles under the scenarios of global N enrichment.

Impacts of climate change and human activities on the aboveground production in alpine grasslands: a case study of the source region of the Yellow River, China

Changes in aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in alpine grasslands are the consequence of climate change and human activities, but it is difficult to disentangle their relative contributions. Based on monthly remote-sensed vegetation index and meteorological data during the period 1982–2010, we analysed the long-term variation of annual ANPP in the source region of the Yellow River and quantified the effects of climate and human activities including grazing on ANPP variability, using the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) model and the ANPP-based residual trend analysis method. Our results suggested that ANPP increased in 80% of alpine grasslands. Areas with negative changes in ANPP were found mainly in the eastern portion of the region, accounting for 0.3% of alpine grasslands. ANPP was positively correlated with the monthly mean temperature from June to September and the sunshine duration in September at a regional scale. Moreover, ANPP was negatively correlated with the total livestock numbers. Using the residual trend analysis method, we demonstrated that climate and human activities accounted for 76.6 and 23.4%, respectively, of the variability in ANPP for the entire study region in 1982–2010. We concluded that climate change alleviated climatic constraints, in particular temperature limitations and sunshine duration, resulting in a significant increase in ANPP. Overgrazing was supposed to be the primary driver for grassland degradation in the eastern region. Our study has implications for grassland management and its sustainability to minimize the risk of grassland degradation and desertification processes in geo-ecologically and socially important regions such as the study region in China.

Aboveground net primary productivity of vegetation along a climate-related gradient in a Eurasian temperate grassland: spatiotemporal patterns and their relationships with climate factors

Accurate assessments of spatiotemporal patterns in net primary productivity and their links to climate are important to obtain a deeper understanding of the function, stability and sustainability of grassland ecosystems. We combined a satellite-derived NDVI time-series dataset and field-based samples to investigate spatiotemporal patterns in aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), and we examined the effect of growing season air temperate (GST) and precipitation (GSP) on these patterns along a climate-related gradient in an eastern Eurasian grassland. Our results indicated that the ANPP fluctuated with no significant trend during 2001–2012. The spatial distribution of ANPP was heterogeneous and decreased from northeast to southwest. The interannual changes in ANPP were mainly controlled by year-to-year GSP; a strong correlation of interannual variability between ANPP and GSP was observed. Similarly, GSP strongly influenced spatial variations in ANPP, and the slopes of fitted linear functions of the GSP–ANPP relationship increased from arid temperate desert grassland to humid meadow grassland. An exponential function could be used to fit the GSP–ANPP relationship for the entire region. An improved moisture index that combines the effects of GST and GSP better explained the variations in ANPP compared with GSP alone. In comparisons with the previous studies, we found that the relationships between spatiotemporal variations in ANPP and climate factors were probably scale dependent. We imply that the quantity and spatial range of analyzed samples contribute to these different results. Multi-scale studies are necessary to improve our knowledge of the response of grassland ANPP to climate change.

Grazing intensity differentially regulates ANPP response to precipitation in North American semiarid grasslands.

Grazing intensity elicits changes in the composition of plant functional groups in both shortgrass steppe (SGS) and northern mixed-grass prairie (NMP) in North America. How these grazing intensity-induced changes control aboveground net primary production (ANPP) responses to precipitation remains a central open question, especially in light of predicted climate changes. Here, we evaluated effects of four levels (none, light, moderate, and heavy) of long-term (>30yr) grazing intensity in SGS and NMP on: (1) ANPP; (2) precipitation-use efficiency (PUE, ANPP : precipitation); and (3) precipitation marginal response (PMR; slope of a linear regression model between ANPP and precipitation). We advance prior work by examining: (1) the consequences of a range of grazing intensities (more grazed vs. ungrazed); and (2) how grazing-induced changes in ANPP and PUE are related both to shifts in functional group composition and physiological responses within each functional group. Spring (April-June) precipitation, the primary determinant of ANPP, was only 12% higher in NMP than in SGS, yet ANPP and PUE were 25% higher. Doubling grazing intensity in SGS and nearly doubling it in NMP reduced ANPP and PUE by only 24% and 33%, respectively. Increased grazing intensity reduced C3 graminoid biomass and increased C4 grass biomass in both grasslands. Functional group shifts affected PUE through biomass reductions, as PUE was positively associated with the relative abundance of C3 species and negatively with C4 species across both grasslands. At the community level, PMR was similar between grasslands and unaffected by grazing intensity. However, PMR of C3 graminoids in SGS was eightfold higher in the ungrazed treatment than under any grazed level. In NMP, PMR of C3 graminoids was only reduced under heavy grazing intensity. Knowing the ecological consequences of grazing intensity provides valuable information for mitigation and adaptation strategies in response to predicted climate change. For example, moderate grazing (the recommended rate) in SGS would sequester the same amount of aboveground carbon as light grazing because ANPP was nearly the same. In contrast, reductions in grazing intensity in NMP from moderate to light intensity would increase the amount of aboveground carbon sequestrated by 25% because of increased ANPP.

Does ecosystem sensitivity to precipitation at the site‐level conform to regional‐scale predictions?

Central to understanding global C cycle dynamics is the functional relationship between precipitation and net primary production (NPP). At large spatial (regional) scales, the responsiveness of aboveground NPP (ANPP) to interannual variation in annual precipitation (AP; ANPPsens) is inversely related to site-level ANPP, coinciding with turnover of plant communities along precipitation gradients. Within ecosystems experiencing chronic alterations in water availability, plant community change will also occur with unknown consequences for ANPPsens. To examine the role plant community shifts may play in determining alterations in site-level ANPPPsens, we experimentally increased precipitation by approximately 35% for two decades in a native Central U.S. grassland. Consistent with regional models, ANPPsens decreased initially as water availability and ANPP increased. However, ANPPsens shifted back to ambient levels when mesic species increased in abundance in the plant community. Similarly, in grassland sites with distinct mesic and xeric plant communities and corresponding 50% differences in ANPP, ANPPsens did not differ over almost three decades. We conclude that responses in ANPPsens to chronic alterations in water availability within an ecosystem may not conform to regional AP-ANPP patterns, despite expected changes in ANPP and plant communities. The result is unanticipated functional resistance to climate change at the site scale.

Effects of artificially varying amounts of rainfall on two semi‐natural grassland types

AbstractQuestionIs a lowland grassland community with a lower amount of ambient precipitation and a high abundance of subdominant species more sensitive to altered rainfall input in comparison with mountain grassland with higher ambient precipitation and a low abundance of subdominant species?Location(1) Lowland Festuca grassland characterized by dry acidophilous vegetation, low mean annual precipitation and high species richness, and (2) mountain Nardus grassland with high mean annual precipitation and low species richness in the Eastern Czech Republic.MethodsWe conducted a manipulative experiment with rainout shelters and gravity irrigation systems. We simulated three levels of precipitation input (50%, 100% and 150%) and examined the treatment effects on above‐ground net primary productivity (ANPP) of the main plant functional groups (grasses, forbs, legumes, shrubs and mosses) and on plant species composition over three consecutive years.ResultsAltered rainfall input had a significant effect on total live ANPP in the drier, lowland grassland community, while no pronounced effect was observed in the mountain grassland characterized by higher ambient precipitation. In the lowland grassland, changes in total ANPP resulted primarily from enhanced growth of subdominant non‐N‐fixing forbs in response to the direct effect of higher artificial rainfall input and an indirect effect of reduced competition with grasses in drier treatments.ConclusionsWetter, species‐poor mountain grasslands will probably show smaller changes in response to expected climate changes in ANPP, species number and abundance than lowland grasslands, characterized by dry acidophilous vegetation, with higher species richness and higher abundance of subordinate species.

Above‐ and belowground responses of arctic tundra ecosystems to altered soil nutrients and mammalian herbivory

Theory and observation indicate that changes in the rate of primary production can alter the balance between the bottom-up influences of plants and resources and the top-down regulation of herbivores and predators on ecosystem structure and function. The exploitation ecosystem hypothesis (EEH) posited that as aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) increases, the additional biomass should support higher trophic levels. We developed an extension of EEH to include the impacts of increases in ANPP on belowground consumers in a similar manner as aboveground, but indirectly through changes in the allocation of photosynthate to roots. We tested our predictions for plants aboveground and for phytophagous nematodes and their predators belowground in two common arctic tundra plant communities subjected to 11 years of increased soil nutrient availability and/or exclusion of mammalian herbivores. The less productive dry heath (DH) community met the predictions of EEH aboveground, with the greatest ANPP and plant biomass in the fertilized plots protected from herbivory. A palatable grass increased in fertilized plots while dwarf evergreen shrubs and lichens declined. Belowground, phytophagous nematodes also responded as predicted, achieving greater biomass in the higher ANPP plots, whereas predator biomass tended to be lower in those same plots (although not significantly). In the higher productivity moist acidic tussock (MAT) community, aboveground responses were quite different. Herbivores stimulated ANPP and biomass in both ambient and enriched soil nutrient plots; maximum ANPP occurred in fertilized plots exposed to herbivory. Fertilized plots became dominated by dwarf birch (a deciduous shrub) and cloudberry (a perennial forb); under ambient conditions these two species coexist with sedges, evergreen dwarf shrubs, and Sphagnum mosses. Phytophagous nematodes did not respond significantly to changes in ANPP, although predator biomass was greatest in control plots. The contrasting results of these two arctic tundra plant communities suggest that the predictions of EEH may hold for very low ANPP communities, but that other factors, including competition and shifts in vegetation composition toward less palatable species, may confound predicted responses to changes in productivity in higher ANPP communities such as the MAT studied here.

Feedback from plant species change amplifies CO2 enhancement of grassland productivity

Dynamic global vegetation models simulate feedbacks of vegetation change on ecosystem processes, but direct, experimental evidence for feedbacks that result from atmospheric CO2 enrichment is rare. We hypothesized that feedbacks from species change would amplify the initial CO2 stimulation of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) of tallgrass prairie communities. Communities of perennial forb and C4 grass species were grown for 5years along a field CO2 gradient (250-500μLL(-1) ) in central Texas USA on each of three soil types, including upland and lowland clay soils and a sandy soil. CO2 enrichment increased community ANPP by 0-117% among years and soils and increased the contribution of the tallgrass species Sorghastrum nutans (Indian grass) to community ANPP on each of the three soil types. CO2 -induced changes in ANPP and Sorghastrum abundance were linked. The slope of ANPP-CO2 regressions increased between initial and final years on the two clay soils because of a positive feedback from the increase in Sorghastrum fraction. This feedback accounted for 30-60% of the CO2 -mediated increase in ANPP on the upland and lowland clay soils during the final 3years and 1year of the experiment, respectively. By contrast, species change had little influence on the ANPP-CO2 response on the sandy soil, possibly because Sorghastrum increased largely at the expense of a functionally similar C4 grass species. By favoring a mesic C4 tall grass, CO2 enrichment approximately doubled the initial enhancement of community ANPP on two clay soils. The CO2 -stimulation of grassland productivity may be significantly underestimated if feedbacks from plant community change are not considered.

Inventory-based estimation of aboveground net primary production in Japan's forests from 1980 to 2005

Abstract. Recent studies based on remote sensing and carbon process models have revealed that terrestrial net primary production (NPP) in the middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere has increased significantly; this is crucial for explaining the increased terrestrial carbon sink in the past several decades. Regional NPP estimation based on significant field data, however, has been rare. In this study, we estimated the long-term changes in aboveground NPP (ANPP) for Japan's forests from 1980 to 2005 using forest inventory data, direct field measurements, and an allometric method. The overall ANPP for all forest types averaged 10.5 Mg ha−1 yr−1, with a range of 9.6 to 11.5 Mg ha−1 yr−1, and ANPP for the whole country totaled 249.1 Tg yr−1 (range: 230.0 to 271.4 Tg yr−1) during the study period. Over the 25 years, the net effect of increased ANPP in needle-leaf forests and decreased ANPP in broadleaf forests has led to an increase of 1.9 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (i.e., 0.79 % yr−1). This increase may be mainly due to the establishment of plantations and the rapid early growth of these planted forests.

Primary Productivity and Precipitation-Use Efficiency in Mixed-Grass Prairie: A Comparison of Northern and Southern US Sites

Precipitation-use efficiency (PUE) is a key determinant of aboveground net primary production (ANPP). We used long-term datasets to contrast ANPP and PUE estimates between northern (southeast Montana) and southern (north Texas) mixed-grass prairies. Effects of varying amounts and temporal distribution of precipitation on PUE were examined at the Montana site, using a rainout shelter and irrigation. Results show that 1) ANPP was 21% less in Montana than Texas (188 g · m-2 vs. 237 g · m-2); 2) plant function type (PFT) composition varied between the two study locations, with cool-season perennial grasses (CSPG) dominating in Montana (52%) and warm-season perennial grasses (WSPG) dominating in Texas (47%); 3) production dynamics varied between the two sites with 90% of ANPP completed by 1 July in Montana as compared to 31 August in Texas; 4) average PUE estimates were greater in Montana (0.56 g dry matter · m-2 · mm-1 of precipitation) than Texas (0.40 g · m-2 · mm-1); and 5) contributions to PUE estimates varied among PFT and location, with CSPG estimates being greater in Montana than Texas (52% vs. 31%) and WSPG estimates being greater in Texas than Montana (47% vs. 27%). Seasonal droughts and supplemental irrigations at the Montana site substantially altered ANPP, PFT biomass composition, and PUE. Results show PUE was responsive to PFT composition relative to amount and seasonal distribution of precipitation. Therefore, one should expect changes in ANPP and PUE to occur with shifts in precipitation patterns until PFT composition becomes adjusted to the regime. La eficiencia del uso de la precipitación (PUE) es una clave determinante de la producción primaria aérea neta (ANPP). Utilizamos una base de datos para contrastar estimaciones de ANPP y PUE entre (el suroeste de Montana) y el sur de los pastizales mixtos (norte de Texas). El efecto de la variación y la cantidad en la distribución temporal de la vegetación en PUE se examinaron en el sitio de Montana, utilizando un refugio para la lluvia e irrigación. Los resultados muestran que: 1) ANPP fue 21% menor en el sitio de Montana, que en el sitio de Texas (188 g · m-2 vs. 237 g · m-2); 2) la composición de los tipos funcionales de las plantas (PFT) varía entre las dos localidades, especies de gramíneas perenes de crecimiento de invierno (CSPG) dominaron en el sitio de Montana (52%) y gramíneas perenes de crecimiento de verano (WSPG) dominaron en el sitio de Texas (47%); 3) La dinámica de la producción varía entre los dos sitios con 90% de ANPP concluido para el 1 de Julio en Montana, comparado al 31 de Agosto en Texas; 4) el promedio de la estimación de PUE fue mayor en Montana (0.56 g de materia seca · m-2 · mm-1 de precipitación) que en Texas (0.40 g · m-2 · mm-1); y 5) las contribuciones a las estimaciones de PUE varían entre PFT y la del sitio, con una estimación CSPG mayor en Montana que en Texas (52% vs. 31%) y la estimación WSPG mayor en Texas que en Montana (47% vs. 27%). Las sequias estacional y la irrigación suplementaria en el sitio de Montana significativamente altera ANPP, la composición de la biomasa de PFT, y PUE. Estos resultados demuestran que PUE fue receptivo a la composición de PFT relativo a la cantidad y la distribución estacional de la precipitación. Por lo que uno debe esperar que ocurran cambios en ANPP y PUE con modificaciones en los patrones de la precipitación hasta que la composición de PFT se ajuste al sistema.

Ecosystem structure and productivity of tropical rain forests along altitudinal gradients with contrasting soil phosphorus pools on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo

Summary We measured above‐ground net primary productivity (ANPP) and ecosystem structure and processes in eight rain forest stands at four elevations (700, 1700, 2700 and 3100 m) and on two geological substrates (sedimentary vs. ultrabasic rock) on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. All ultrabasic sites had smaller pools of total soil phosphorus (P) and of labile inorganic P than did the sedimentary sites at the same altitudes. We predicted that the magnitude of altitudinal changes in ANPP would be less on ultrabasic than on sedimentary substrates, reflecting lower temperature dependency of ANPP under stronger P limitation. Although ANPP declined with increasing altitude on both substrates, the slopes of the two regression lines were similar. The intercept was, however, marginally greater on sedimentary than on ultrabasic substrate. Stand‐level nutrient‐use efficiencies (the ratio of litterfall mass to nutrient return) for N and P were only affected by altitude on ultrabasic substrate where they increased exponentially. Mean foliar N and P contents per unit leaf area of the canopy species increased with altitude on both substrates, but differed between substrates at the same altitude only for P (lower on ultrabasic). Leaf area index (LAI) decreased upslope on both substrates. We assumed that half of primary production was allocated below‐ground in order to evaluate stand level net assimilation rate (NAR). This was nearly constant on sedimentary substrate, but declined linearly with increasing altitude on ultrabasic substrate, where it may have to be added to LAI to explain ANPP patterns. We suggest that on sedimentary substrate trees may be able to maintain NAR under colder environments by increasing foliar N and P per unit leaf area, but P deficiency prevents them from adjusting on ultrabasic substrate.

Estimation of primary production of subhumid rangelands from remote sensing data

Abstract. Above‐ground Net Primary Production (ANPP) is the main determinant of forage availability and hence of stocking density. A tool to track the seasonal and interannual changes in ANPP at the paddock level will be very important for livestock management. We studied the relationship between field ANPP data and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for rangelands of the Flooding Pampa of Argentina using spectral data provided by sensors on board of two satellites: NOAA/AVHRR and Landsat TM. The relationship between NDVI and ANPP was linear both for data derived from NOAA/AVHRR and Landsat TM. Changes in ANPP accounted for a large proportion of the temporal and spatial variation of NDVI: 71% of NOAA/AVHRR data and 74% of Landsat TM data. By inverting these models, ANPP may be inferred from NDVI data at a seasonal and paddock scale. NOAA/AVHRR data captured better the seasonal variation in ANPP and were less sensitive to local variations than Landsat TM data. In contrast, Landsat TM data were more sensitive to inter‐site differences in primary production, except for the winter months. Thus, combining information from these two sources offers a good alternative for monitoring rangeland production at high temporal and spatial resolution.
